“Our proposal seeks to extend the civic space of Federation Square westwards to Flinders Street Station with the creation of a 3-hectare Urban Park above the railway platforms.
The park will become a new urban focus at the southwest corner of the Cbd, playing host to special events and festivals as well as daily social activities and gatherings. Sustainable design is at the heart of our proposal. Buildings and public spaces have been organised to promote walkability, human scaled facades and social connections, and to enhance the convenience of public transportation.
Connections with the regional bicycle network will be improved to provide safe and efficient pathways for bicycles with separation from pedestrians. the Flinders Street Station Redevelopment provides a high-quality architectural and urban design solution to a site of great cultural and civic significance in the heart of Melbourne.
The architectural design proposal consists of the refurbishment of existing architectural elements of worth, as well as the addition of new architectural elements, such as a vast Urban Park, a Western Concourse, a public Glass Box atrium and an extensive redevelopment of the western end of the site with facilities such as a Boutique Hotel, an Interactive Sustainability Park and a Commercial Office Building.
To ensure coherency between the new station and its surroundings, a number of urban design interventions have been proposed that extend beyond the scope of the site boundary, including an Urban Beach, an extended north bank promenade and an enhanced relationship between Flinders Street Station and Federation Square.
These architectural and urban interventions result in the establishment of a Cultural Corridor to the south of the Melbourne Cbd along the Yarra River, with the new Flinders Street Station at the centre.” Description from the architects.
